Basic Requirements and Qualifications
Needless to say, not every postal job has the exact same requirements. However, in general, applicants must pass a written examination and pass a drug test. Applicants must sign up for the test, and are notified of the date, time, and place of the exam. Materials are sent to the applicant to help them prepare for the test. All in all, the test takes about two hour to complete.
Part Time Flexible Positions
College students and others looking for temporary employment with the Postal Service over the summer are hired as either temporary or Part Time Flexible. The pay rate for part-time flexible employees will differ as they are based upon a rate schedule for specific positions. In these cases, tests are not required but the job cannot lead to a career position either. If you may be interested in a summer job like this, it is important to apply early. In fact, it is suggested that you contact your local Post Offices no later than February regarding summer employment.
These temporary employees also have the opportunity for extra work for an 21-day period around Christmas when a supplemental Postal work force is needed for peak mail periods. You can watch for casual temporary positions to be posted on the Postal Services' employment web site.
Full-Time and Part-Time Flexible
The regular postal work force is comprised of full-time and part-time flexible employees (less than 40 hours per week). Flexible employees work fluctuating schedules and must be available for work as scheduled each week. Part-Time Flexible employees are hourly and earn between $12.29 - $27.26 an hour depending on their grade level.
