About H&R Block
The company was founded on January 25, 1955 by two brothers, Henry and Richard Bloch. Prior to launching H&R Block, they operated a company offering bookkeeping services to small business owners. Income tax services were added as a courtesy to existing clients and family members.
The brothers decided to advertise their income tax services for the 1955 tax season. The service was very popular from the outset; the IRS had stopped offering free income tax preparation services to taxpayers in Kansas City a short time before.
The following year, H&R Block offered its services to customers in New York. The company opened seven office in that city. The results were very encouraging, to say the least: H&R Block generated $65,000.00 in income in 1956!
Today, H&R Block operates three distinct divisions:
- Income Tax Services
- Services for Businesses
- Financial Services for Consumers
